Did you know there’s a World Internet Day?

The Internet has changed forever the way we relate to the world, enabling communication between different regions in real time. Almost every aspect of our daily lives and the world’s economy have been impacted by these advances. It is only amazing that the Internet has developed in just three decades.

However, there are wide disparities in Internet access, quality and freedom of use in different countries around the world. For this reason, the Internet Society and the Spanish Asociación de Usuarios de Internet (Internet Users Association) promoted the celebration of World Internet Day on October 25, 2005.

That same year, the Information Society decided at the Tunis Summit to propose May 17th to the UN as a candidate date for the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, a proposal that was finally accepted. It was therefore decided to move the celebration of the World Internet Day to this second date.

In Spain, in order to stimulate the visualization and participation of broader parts of society in the World Internet Day, a program with various activities is held each year. In 2022, the focus was placed on the theme of Internet for seniors and healthy aging.

Did you know that reading this article automatically makes you an Internet user? Well… congratulations! You too have a day to celebrate. Since August 23, 2002, the Day of the Internet User is separately celebrated every year, to commemorate the anniversary of the publication of the first web page, which we have already described in detail here.
